Google Announces Tool to Check Backlinks

February 6, 2007

We’ve been used to checking a sample list of our backlinks on Google using the link: operator. Now Google Webmaster Central has announced a tool that could provide a much bigger list of backlinks to website owners of how their site performs. This is like the Yahoo Site Explorer but you would have to verify that you are the website owner to be able to access information about the website.

Google New Webmaster Tool

You asked, and we listened: We’ve extended our support for querying links to your site to much beyond the link: operator you might have used in the past. Now you can use webmaster tools to view a much larger sample of links to pages on your site that we found on the web. Unlike the link: operator, this data is much more comprehensive and can be classified, filtered, and downloaded. All you need to do is verify site ownership to see this information.

I’m just about trying the tool out, it looks useful for those who keep watch of their backlinks on Google. At the back of my mind, this thought just won’t go away: Google finds out who owns which sites but that is better than competition finding more information about your site, right? I’m confused so why don’t you try it out for yourself and let’s share knowledge?
